Poor Trout Fishing

During the floods in May it was estimated that between 500 and 700 fullygrown trout were destroyed in the Ruakituri River and the poor fishing experienced by several anglers last week-end bears out that estimation. Fishing in the upper reaches of the river, the anglers took only a few small fish, all of which were in poor condition. One fisherman, with over 20 years’ experience in the district, said today that he had never seen such poor fishing at the beginning of a season. Everywhere along the river there is evidence of the flooding and erosion. Some trout fry were liberated recently. It is expected that it will be at least two seasons before the feeding grounds are restored and reasonably-sized fish are again obtainable in the Ruakituri River.
