RUATORIA PLAYERS HOLD HOCKEY CUP

The Gage Cup, presented this season for challenge between Maori hockey teams in the East Coast district, was at stake when the Kiritapu (Omaio) women's team were defeated by Hikurangi (Ruatoria) by two goals to nil in Ruatoria on Saturday. Kiritapu, the first holders of the cup, staved off challenges by the Opotiki teams, St. Mary’s and Te Hui, but lost to Kawa Kawa (Te Araroa). Kawa Kawa lost in turn to Hikurangi and Kiritapu lodged the concluding challenge. Mrs. Butler and Mrs. August were capable full-backs, and Miss Ngamoki and Mrs. Parekura very sound forwards. They did not, however, subdue the Hikurangi combination, M. Haua, and E. Hiroki being particularly fast, and F. Haua providing very solid defence.
E. Hiroki opened Hikurangi's score with a shot off the centre’s pass, in the first spell. In the second half a Kiritapu defender was penalised in the circle and F. Haua netted Hikurangi’s second goal from the bully. Miss L. Karauti and Mr. S. Tawhai were the referees. The teams were:—
Hikurangi (Ruatoria). —Mrs. W. Haua. F. Haua, M. Brown, H. Hazel, M. Ngarimu, E. Paki, K. Moeke, M. Haua, H. Tamati, H. Haua, E. Hiroki. Piritapu (Omaio). —Mrs. Williams, Mrs. Butler, Mrs. August, Miss P. Ngamoki Miss Tipiwai, Miss Tawhai, Mrs. Parekura, Miss R. Ngamoki. Mrs. Ngamoki, Miss Delamere, Miss Parekura. Playing at Hiruharama, the Tokomaru basketball and hockey sides, Wanna and Ruatauwhare, were also defeated by Hikurangi. In the evening a dance was held at the Nga-Tama-Toa Dining Hali. „ . In the northern end of Ruatoria the visitors and teams from Omaio and Tolaga were entertained at a dance arranged as a wind-up to the football season.
