EFFORTS TO REPAIR SHIP FAIL

(P.A.) AUCKLAND. Oct. 1. Engineers on the Fcrnmoor have struggled continuously to free the jammed engine while the vessel is being towed by the Palana but they have made no impression. The task of repairing the damaged engine was hopeless, the ship’s master Captain Lamb, said in a radio message to the Auckland Star today. lie praised the fine work of the Palana and commended all hands of both vessels o n maintaining the tow during the last heavy blow. Yesterday’s weather was fine and the tow averaged five knots, but “tonight’s sky looks threatening.” The vessels today were still more than 1400 miles from Auckland.
