Soviet Claims Berlin Power Company Is Bankrupt
(10 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 1. The Soviet-licensed newspaper Vorwaerts says that Berlin’s municipal power company, Bewag, has declared itself bankrupt and therefore will be unable to proceed with the reconstruction of the power plant which the British and American occupation authorities had sponsored to provide electricity for the Western sectors. The American commandant of Berlin, Colonel Frank Howley t however, said that Bewag would continue to operate. “Whether Bewag be termed bankrupt or not is not important. That is just a bookkeeping matter. We will continue to have light and gas, and are contemplating a power increase during the winter.”
