FURTHER SUCCESS HOPED IN COMING ATHLETICS SEASON

The season had been very successful and indicated that the standard of performance and populara ity of sports contests were once again assuming the proportions of the pre-war period, stated the report presented at the annual meeting of the Gisborne Amateur Athletic and Harrier Club on Thursday evening. The attendance numbered approximately 40. Appreciation of the support given during the season and of the sustained interest shown by those in attendance at the meeting was expressed by the president, Mr. F. W. Dobbie, in opening the meeting. Voicing a welcome he noted with pleasure the presence of a number or prospective new members. He appealed for a continuance of the co-operation which had been responsible for the success of the club’s activities and drew attention to the valuable service given during the season and also in the winter period by the centre coach, Mr. P. F. Sharpiey, in fostering interest in athletics, particularly among high school pupils. Winners cf Trophies The report recorded the season’s winners of club trophies as follows; Mar-tin-Aislabie Cup and B.ack and White Cup, B. Sweet; Johnston Cup, E. Tee; Rose, Bowl and Norma Wilson Cup, Miss J. Torrey; Pat Boot Memorial Cup T. Parkinson; President’s Cup, W. Norman; E. R. Brown Trophy, W. Robinson; Star Cup, S. Parker; T. R. Gordon Cup, N. Currie; Barry Cup, R. Meban; C. £. Brown Trophy, B. Whitton. Two teams totalling 32 members were sent to the provincial championships at Napier and Hastings, many of the club members obtained centre titles. The club was represented at the national junior championships, held in Auckland, by the following members: — Miss J. Torrey, lOOvds, 220yds, relay; R. Meban, 100yds, 220yds, relay W. Bignell, 100yds. 220yds, relay; D. Davis 120yds hurdles, 220yds hurdles, 440yds relay, broad jump: W. Robinson, shot, discus, hammer, javelin; J. Sloan, one mile, two miles; N. Currie, half-mile, one mile; L. Forbes, hop, step and jump, broad jump; S. Garland, pole vault, 120yds hurdles. The report congratulated Sloan on his fine performance in winning the N.Z. junior two miles championship. Referring to the debit of approximately £lB on the year’s operations as disclosed in the statement of accounts, the report stated that travelling expenses constituted the main item of expenditure, though new equipment also accounted for a considerable amount. It was felt that the policy of assisting teams and delegates to visit other areas had had beneficial results. . The report also referred to negotiations opened by the Gisborne Thirty Thousand Club to conduct a Fun Fair at the grounds controlled by the club as a result of which financial benefit to the club might be expected. In conclusion the report expended thanks to all who had assisted the club during the year.

Following a further explanation by the chaiman of the proposals of the Thirty Thousand Club and assurances received from that body concerning the use of the ground by the athletic club, the committee was authorised to make such arrangements as were deemed advisable. Dobbie, H. K. Swan, E. E. Caughey; hon. secretary, Mr. S. Garland; hon. treasurer, Mr. J. Garland; executive committee, Miss M. Duncan, Miss J. Torrey, Messrs. A. F. Gardiner, K. Messenger, W. Clouston, p. Davis, W. Robinson; club captain, Mr. S. Gribben; hon. auditor, Mr. F. J. Stenner; hon. solicitor, Mr. E. T. Brosnahan.

Tribute to the services rendered as president by Mr. Dobbie was voiced by Mr. R. J. Hickman, the chairman of the retiring executive, on whose motion a vote of appreciation was adopted with acclamation.

In thanking the meeting, Mr. Dobbie indicated that, as his duties in the near future would entail absences from the district, he regretted he was unable to accept active office in the club in the coming season.

Votes of thanks were also accorded Messrs. _ F. J. Stenner and E. T. Brosnahan in appreciation of their services as hon. auditor and hon. solicitor respectively.

At an assembly of the executive committee following the annual meeting Miss Torrey was elected as chairman.
