MR. BERGERSON RETIRES FROM P. & T. DEPARTMENT

Completing 41 years’ service in the Post and Telegraph Department yesterday, Mr. H. K. Bergerson, deputy chief postmaster, Gisborne, was the recipient of good wishes and a presentation from members of the staffs of the Chief Post Office, Gisborne, and district post offices. In presenting a tea set to Mr. and Mrs. Bergerson, the chief postmaster, Mr. D. J. Foley, spoke highly of his deputy’s work. An occasion such as yesterday’s was tinged with both gladness and sorrow, said Mr. Foley, and he could only express the department’s regret at losing a man of such capability as Mr. Bergerson. A letter from the director-general of the Post and Telegraph Department stated that Mr. Bergerson had always shown zeal and efficiency in his work and had been of great assistance to the postmasters under whom he had served. Joining the department in Wellington in 1907 as a message boy, Mr. Bergerson was transferred to Palmerston North in 1910. He spent the greater part of the years between 1910 and 1929 in Palmerston North and in tha latter year was transferred to Gisborne as supervisor of the clerical branch. In 1943 he was promoted to chief clerk and two years later to deputy chief postmaster. The help which Mr. Bergerson had given to all the officials under his control and the happy relationship which had always existed between him and other departmental heads was spoken of by Messrs. G. J. W. Tyer, W. P. Lange, D. F. McLeod, H. M. Stephens and J. H. McKay, representing the various departments. Letters from district postmasters congratulating Mr. Bergerson on his retirement were also read. In reply, Mr. Bergerson expressed his appreciation of having worked with the officers and staff in the Gisborne district, and the harmony which had always existed. During nearly 20 years In the district' he had seen many changes and the post office services had progressed considerably. It had been an honour to belong t.o such a great service as that of the Post and Telegraph Department. Both he and Mrs. Bergerson would always look back on his years with the department with pleasure.
