TALE OF JACOBITE DAYS

A romantic tale of the Jacobite days is told by David Whitelaw in his new novel “Garments of Repentance.” The chief character is a young Scottish officer who, after his return from the wars on the Continent, finds that in his civilian life difficulties are being created for him as a result of his previous association with an unscrupulous actress. His efforts to free himself and marry a girl who would grace the estate to which he is heir lead him into many strange paths- More interesting than the love theme, however, are the pen pictures of England and Scotland in the clays of the “Forty-five,” when the Stuart cause brought so much bloodshed into the two kingdoms. The undercurrent of Jacobite plotting runs through most of the book. (Published by the house of Macdonald, London).
