The growth of the band and the steady increase in its efficiency has been noticeable in recent years, and the results apparent at the Saturday evening parades are a commentary upon the work of the local officers. Sunday School Children’s Picnic Scholars of the Punaruku, Hicks Bay and Matakaoa Sunday Schools who have qualified for membership of the special class arranged by the organisers had an outing at Hicks Bay last Saturday. The special class programme makes provision for Bible study, sport and games and Scripture reading. The picnic was thoroughly enjoyed, Makorokoro Road Opened The no-exit road leading into the Wnakaangiangi Valley has been substantially extended by the formation of four or live miles of good road up to and beyond the Makorokoro station homestead. The new road has been pm in primarily to provide access to valuable stands of timber two or three mites beyond the homestead. It also provides long-awaited roading facilities for the occupiers of Makorokoro, Messrs C. and W. O'Regan, who hitherto have been obliged to ride three or four miles in order to reach the Whakaangiangi road terminus. Makorokoro station has been occupied since about 1909, formerly by Mr. and Mrs. W. O’Regan and more recently by their sons, the present settlers. About 38 years ago a fair weather road traversing the riverbed provided partial access and some 20 years later the present Whakaangiangi road brought access to within four miles of the station. Timber from the district will be milled at the Whakaangiangi sawmill. Obituary—George Ahuriri As the result of a long illness, George Ahuriri passed away last week. A large gathering of relatives and friends attended the tangi, which was held in Te Araroa. The interment took place at Hicks Bay. George Ahuriri will be remembered by many of his friends for his unfailing readiness to help in matters concerning the land and by officials of the Department of Maori Affairs for the assistance he always willingly extended when they visited Te Araroa. He was educated at Te Araroa and Hicks Bay Schools and later at Te Aute College. He was the son of Mr. Henry Ahuriri, a prominent Te Araroa resident, and Mrs. Hiria Akuhata Ahuriri.
