ENGLISHWOMAN MADE MEMBER OF KIWI CLUB
An interesting expression of the deep gratitude which the Maori people feel towards those who helped to entertain their soldiers overseas was made at the Tairawhiti Kiwi Club on Wednesday evening, when members tendered Miss Ruth Roy, England, a complimentary evening, made her an honorary member of their club, and gave her a present. Speaking for those present, Mr. E. Hooper welcomed Miss Roy and spoke of her work as a Lady Frances Ryder hostess during the war. Many Maori Battalion soldiers had received warm hospitality through the Lady Frances Ryder scheme and their families in New Zealand were most grateful for it. Added Welcomes Mrs- Takapuna Rangiuia added a welcome, and Captain Ngata, who was in England with the Second Echelon, recounted some of his experiences there and told of entertainment and hospitality given to him through the Lady Frances Ryder scheme, emphasising the appreciation which had been felt by all Maori soldiers towards their hosts and hostesses. Miss Roy was presented b y Mrs. E. Hooper with a piupiu and taneko head-band, both of which she received with evident delight. In her reply. Miss Roy offered sincere thanks to the Tairawhiti Kiwi Club members for the great honour they had given her. She hoped to return in April and would see them again then.
Action songs and poi dances were performed for Miss Roy’s benefit, after which she was taken on a tour of the club-rooms. A delicious supper concluded the
