AIR OF UNCERTAINTY RETARDS RECOVERY OF EUROPE
“In America, and also in Britain, the attitude of Russia and the activities of Communism throughout the world are regarded as a very serious threat to civilisation and economic recovery.” This was the opinion expressed in an interview by Mr. James Wattie, managing director of J. Wattie Canneries, Limited, who has returned to Hastings after a three months' visit overseas. During his absence Mr. Wattie flew round the world, travelling across America on the outward journey and returning via the Middle East and Australia.
“The possibility ol war is regarded abroad as very real,” said Mr. Wattie, "but the people are. of course, hoping that the world will be saved from such a disaster . There is, however, a feeling of grave uncertainty and it is felt that everything will depend on the outcome of the conference at present in progress in Moscow. “This grave situation is retarding the recovery of Europe,” said Mr. Wattie. "In fact, until settled it is difficult to see how recovery can be accomplished. The firmness of America’s stand, along with the other Western Powers, is the main hope of the people who live in the threatened areas and elsewhere.” America was very alive to the danger, as was evident from her preparations in various parts of the world, added Mr Wattie “The fact that trade is passing be-, tween Russia and the other Powers, and also that the doors are open to ferences. may be a hopeful sign,” he said “Preparedness and sound leadership are considered to be the greatest safeguards.”
