53 GAS WORKERS IN AUCKLAND DISMISSED
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, Aug. 27. Fifty-three employees of the Auckland Gas Company have received a week’s notice because the company says that only 17 men are required to operate the new plant just brought irto commission. The secretary of the Auckland Gas Workers’ Union, Mr. J. Kane, said today that the closing down of No. 1 retort house where these men had been working and their dismissal did not seem warranted. He added that the manager of the company, Mr. R. Worley, had assured the union that tnere would be no dismissals when the ntw plant was operated and that the No. 1 retort house staff could be absorbed elsewhere. Replying today. Mr. Worley said retort house breakdowns had changed the position. The company was giving a large bonus to the dismissed workers with over one year’s service
