Baby’s Life Saved By Replacement Of Blood
(P.A.) WELLINGTON. Aug. 28. The life of a baby born recently afc Wellington Public Hospital was saved by a radical blood transfusion designed to replace its natural blood as completely as possible with a fresh supply from other people. Though this type of operation has been recenly carried out a good deal overseas and even on a few occasions in different parts of New Zealand the Wellington case is regarded as 3 particularly gratifying and dramatia one, resulting from high order teamwork on the part of the obstetrician’ and the hospital laboratory and surgical staff. The transfusion was necessitated by R.H, Factor —an incompatability in the blood of the parents—which, in soma cases, can be so severe as to causa children of such parents to be born dead or die soon after birth. The baby’s blood was tested immediately on birth and it was then taken to the operating theatre where fresh blood was introduced through the ankle and the child’s blood was drained out through the wrist. The new blood remained good and the child is now well and at home, with no likelihood of its being endangered again.
