(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 3. "It is no exaggeration to say that the institutes are a great factor in the national life of the whole Empire,” said Lady Freyberg in opening the annual conference of the Dominion Federation of New Zealand Women’s Institutes.

Over 1000 delegates fro mall parts of New Zealand were present. The retiring Dominion president, Mrs. H. J. Barnicoat, is presiding. Her Excellency congratulated the members on the progress in cultural work, particularly in preserving and encouraging Maori handicrafts.

On behalf of English women she thanked the members for the food parcels sent to Britain.

POWER QUOTAS EXCEEDED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 3. Electricity consumers in both islands considerably exceeded their power allocations during the week ended on Sunday. The North Island consumption of 35.084,000 units exceeded the allocation of 33,030,000 units by 2.054,000 units or 6.21 per cent. The South Island allocation was 13,442,000 units and the consumption was 14,272.000, being 830,000 units or 6.17 per cent above the allocation.
