N.Z. GIRL SECOND IN 100 M. HEAT OF BACKSTROKE

(11 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 3. Ngaire Lane, New Zealand, qualified for the semi-final of the 100 metres women’s backstroke at the Olympic Games by taking second place to H. Vanderhorst, of Holland, in the first heat.

The Dutch girl’s time was lmin. 18.7 sec. and Ngaire Lane’s lmin. 18.8 sec. The winners of the other heats broke the Olympic record of lmin. 16.6 sec—K. M. Harup, of Denmark, who returned lmin 15.65ec., J Davies, of Australia, lmin. 16.4 sec. Miss Lane will meet Miss Harup in the semi-final tomorrow, and also Vanderhorst and S. Z. Zimmerman, who returned lmin. I6.Bsec. Woodfield, Holland. Carter and Gosling gave two hakas for Miss Lane—before and after race, which drew great applause from the crowd.
