DRIFTING VESSEL’S COMPANY LIVED ON COCOA AND JAM

PERTH, Aug. 3.

The passengers and crew o£ the crippled steamer Papachristidis Vassilios lived on cocoa and for Dearly a fortnight after their food ran low. The vessel is now in tow of the West Australian Government motorship Ivybra which picked her up GSO miles north-west of Fremantle.

The ships will probably take about five days to reach port. The steamer had been drifting since her boilers broke down °n July 23. She carried nine Greek passengers who boarded her at Suez. One of them told their rescuers that the passengers and crew had been hungry for 22 days and that some members of the crew were suffering from boils because of the lack of fresh food. Crew members said the ship nad an unlucky voyage which began when she was delayed in England about a for!night. _ , , After leaving England a fire broke out in the hold and burned for 12 days. Later the boilers and generator broke down.
