HARRIER TITLES IN TWO GRADES

In the keenest qompctitlon of the season G. Smythe and J. Jennings took the titles in the senior and junior divisions respectively in the cross-country championships of the Gisborne Y.M.C.A. Harrier Club on Saturday.

Seniors covered two laps and juniors one of the course of three and an eighth miles starting and finishing at Kaiti School. Conditions were not as favourable as they were for the Fred Hewitt trophy contest with Napier over the same course three weeks previously but most runners showed improvement in time- Results follow. Senior Championship—G. Smythe, 4?-min. Ifisec.. 1; R. O’Kane, 43min. 59 sec., 2; P. Pollard, 44min. 29sec., 3. Junior Championship.—J. Jennings, ISmin. 55sec.. 1: G. McDonald. 20min. ssec., 2; D. Smith, 21min. 59sec„ 3. Miller led off the senior pack and opened up a 40vd. gap on O’Kane. Pollard and Smythe in the first quarter of a mile. Gabolinscy, Cumming, Sheppard and Tucker ran together 20yds. behind. Miller maintained his lead over the hills and around the first lap, Smythe, Pollard, and O’Kane running behind in that order separated by several yards. After the first series of hills had been negotiated in the second lap. Miller fell back, leaving Pollard and O'Kane to fight it out over the concluding one and a-half miles, of road and boggy fields. The three runners descended to Wainui road with little between them, but Smythe and O’Kane drew away from Pollard i/at Tamarau. the race finishing in that order. The early pacemaker. Miller, made a fine finishing effort, but had lost too much ground. The juniors were led away by-' D. Smith, but McDonald and Jennings were in charge before the hills were reached. Usually the pacemaker. Jennings. could not keep up with McDonald who reached Wainui road, after one and a-half miles of hillwork. 190 yards ahead. Smith being well backHowever, Jennings gradually closed oil McDonald on the road and the pair ran stride for stride, till Jennings forged ahead to win by lOsec. McDonald will be a junior again next year. At present he is a most promising runner and should figure well in the coming road races.
