WEST END DRESS SHOP ROBBERY

LONDON, June 20

Forty-eight-year-old Mrs. Elka Altman was attacked, tied up and robbed in her West End dress shop today for the second time in two years. Five men rushed into the shop and the leader shouted: “We’re crooks come to rob you. Give us your jewellery and money.” He thrust Mrs. Altman on to a divan and threatened to gag her. Remembering her previous gagging, she cried, "Don’t do that. I won’t scream.”

The gangsters threatened to blow out her brains if she moved, tied her hands behind her back, tore off a ring, disconnected the telephone, went into a fitting cubicle and ripped up the floorboards, disclosing her hiding place where £2OO, a diamond wristlet watch and petrol coupons were hidden. It was all over in three minutes. Mrs. Altman says last year’s gangsters stole £2500. She has also suffered from burglars, who took £6OO worth of dresses last month, and a woman handbag thief, who robbed her of £IOO.
