FLOOD DAMAGE TOTALS £24,702

WAIROA NEWS

WAIROA, July 14.

Mr. A. T. Carroll, Wairoa, is on a brief visit'to Wellington. Mr. E. Mulcahy has returned to the Mahia Peninsula after visiting Wellington.

Mr. D. Glengarry, Wairoa, left today to seek medical advice in Wellington.

At yesterday’s meeting of the Wairoa County Council the chairman, Mr. A. T. Carroll, bid farewell to Mr. W. McLeod, who has been Works Department engineer at Wairoa for some time, the speaker referring to the great assistance the departing officer had been to the council. Mr. Carroll also extended a welcome to Mr. McLeod's successor, Mr. McGregor. Reporting to the Wairoa County Council yesterday, the county clerk, Mr. I. C. Moore, stated that the flood damage assessed up to date totalled £24.702; £15,277 of this amount was for roads and bridges and £9485 for damage to main highways.

As a result of a tour of inspection of tlie Mahia riding, the Wairoa County Council yesterday decided to carry out improvements to the culverts on the roadway to the Mahia township, these having proved inadequate to deal with flood-waters in the past. As a result of the flooding it was stated much damage was being done to farm lands and also the metal on the road was fast disappearing. It is estimated the work can be completed for £l5O.
