TWO PENSIONERS VICTIMS OF SERIOUS ASSAULT

HAMILTON, July 14.

Two old-age pensioners who have been sharing a room off the back porch in a boarding house in Hamilton were assaulted by- two unknown intruders in the early hours of this morning and severely beaten up. Both were admitted to the Waikato Hospital and one is in a serious condition.

The pensioners are Mr. Francis Henry Connor, aged 69 years, who is in a serious condition suffering from severe head injuries, and the other is Mr. George Walmsley, aged 75, who is not so seriously injured. The assault occurred shortly after 1.15 a.m. and apparently both men were sleeping when their assailants entered the room. Mr. Walmsley is a onelegged man, but both men apparently put up-a good defence, as the noise of the assault was heard by other residents in the boarding house and by people across the road, who said that the assault was apparently prolonged. When eventually people went to make inquiries they were too late to stop the two assailants from running away.

The police, who were early on the scene making investigations, could give no indication of the reason for the assault.

Inquiries are proceeding.
