In the days of Cobb and Company, he worked for that firm as a coach driver, first in Australia, and from 1872 in New Zealand. Later, he was a mail contractor in Central Otago and also tried his hand ait prospecting for gold. He is widley-read and Dickens and other classical novelists are among his favourites. For the, last year or two he has been an inmate of the Gore Hospital, though his health remains fairly good in spite of his great age.
