£l6-16-6 To Be Basic Wage for Broken Hill Miners

SYDNEY, July 14,

In August the wage for a Broken Hill mine worker will rise to not less than £l6 16s Gd weekly. This will be the rate for the mine worker on the basic wage, but most workers will receive considerably more. Some miners on contract work already earn £sl weekly and will probably receive an even higher wage next month, but their return is considered exceptional because they are working on a rich lode.

The high wages are the result of the lead bonus paid to about 4500 adults under the 33-year-old agreement between the silver and lead companies of Broken Hill and the unions.

This bonus, based on the average realised price of lead is already £9 7s Gd weekly and rises next month to £9 17s 6d which is a record for the industry.

Every worker in the four companies, whether a miner or not, receives the bonus but workers not employed by the companies do not. There is consequently a striking disparity in the return to some workers performing identical duties.
