NEW TRANSPORT LICENSES GRANTED BY AUTHORITY

A heavy schedule of work connected with the renewal and granting of additional transport authorities to carriers in the Gisborne district was dealt with by

the No. 1 Transport Licensing Authority, Mr. E. J. Phelan, at a sitting in Gisborne yesterday. Passenger Services

R. A. Atkins (Mr- D. E. Chrisp). was granted a license to carry workers to and from Patutahi to Gisborne each day. the service which had been carried out by A. D. Peach having been discontinued. A Matawai contractor, M. Hustler (Mr. A. J. Stock), was granted a contract. license for one vehicle within a 35-mile radius of Matawai.

Two taxi proprietors, C- R. E. Gregory (Mr. K. A. Woodward), and R. E. Murray (Mr. K. A. Woodward), had their applications granted for the right to charge individual taxi fares for running to the showgrounds, race meetings. the Gisborne Oval and from the Gisborne railway station. Amended Licenses

Decision was reserved by the authority in the application of R. N- Torter, Tokbmaru Bav (Mr. G. .T. Jeune), who applied for permission to extend his bus service from Hautanoa through Tokomaru Bav and to Te Puia as ’required. Evidence was given .by the applicant that many residents had requested a service to take them to dances at Te Puia on Friday nights, and to sports meetings on Saturdays and public holidays. The application was opposed on behalf of Tokomaru Bay taxi proprietors by Mr. K- A. Woodward.

B- H. Wilcox successfully applied for the rights to operate one extra vehicle because of heavy loading on his present vehicles. He was also allowed to alter the timetable of the BartlettsGisborne bus on Saturday mornings to bring it into line with the other five mornings of the week. There were no objections. The license of the Minister of Railways (Mr. W. A. Andrew) for a passenger service between Te Araroa and Kicks Bay was renewed and an order made that the clause in the transport licensing passenger regulations should not app]v following the occas’oos on which picture trips were operated. An application by E. L. Biles (Mr. D- E. Chrisp) to run three instead of two trips a week in his bus between Mangatuna and Tolaga Bay was declined by the authority. The application was* opposed by Mr. G. J. Jeune on behalf of the two Tolaga Bay taxi proprietors and by the Railways Department. Evidence was given by Biles that his bus was always heavily loaded at present. The manager of the Radways Road Services operating on the Fast Coast. Mr. S. Wellam. claimed the present Mangatuna-Tolaga Ray service was adequate. Licenses Transferred

The transfer of a vehicle authority from C Wilkie, Ruatoria (Mr. L. T. Burnard) to M. Hyland, jnr., Tikitiki j Mr. G. J. Jeune) was approved subject i to the authority's approval of thq price. Opposition was offered by Mr. K. Gil- f landers Scott on behalf of G. S. Colbert. ■ An ex-serviceman, P. J. Walsh (Mr. K. A. Woodward) opposed unsuccess- • fully the application for the transfer of a taxi license from D. A. Peryer, | Gisborne, to J. Maynard, Manutuke li (Mr. K. Gillanders Scott). Although s Walsh was an ex-serviceman, and therefore entitled to preference, he had § not applied for a license and therefore “ must be refused, stated the authority; The transfer was approved subject to goodwill price investigation, as was the : taxi license transfer from H. S. Drum- J mond to Peryer. ii An amendment to the timetable of | the Gisborne-Wairoa service to' leaverGisborne at 1.15 p.m. was granted the Minister of Railways (Mr. W. Andrew). A license for a rental car to be operated at Tolaga Bay was granted O. G. James (Mr. K. A; Woodward), despite opposition by the two Tolaga Bay taxi proprietors. Subject to the approval of the price the transfer of a taxi license from C. G. Connolly, Ruatoria, to K. and D. McClutchie ((McClutchie Bros.), Ruatoria (Mr. K. Gillanders Scott), was approved. Goods Services One vehicle authority for the cartage of logs in the Waikohu, Cook and Wairoa Counties was granted to T. Scudder Gisborne (Mr. A. J. Stock). Chaffc-ys Transport, Limited, Tokomaru Bay were granted an additional vehicle authority for the cartage of materials for the Works Department and local bodies in the Matakaoa, Waiapu, Uawa and Cook Counties and part of the Opotiki County. A restricted license to carry furniture and stud stock in the Waikohu and Wairoa Counties was granted M. C. Scragg, Patutahi (Mr. L. C. Parker). The vehicle authority to J. McKenna, Ruatoria (Mr. G. J. Jeune). was transferred to McKenna’s Transport, Limited, Ruatoria, and the license renewed. Amended Licenses No opposition was offered when W. J. Walker, Whakaangiangi was granted two vehicle authorities on the same terms as the two already held.
