BRITAIN PURGING REDS FROM ARMED FORCES
,(10 a.m.) LONDON, June 21. The Government’s purge of Communists is being extended to the forces, says the Daily Express industrial correspondent. Known Communists are to be posted to units where they cannot get access to secret information. They will not be allowed to serve in units undergoing operational training or trying out new types of equipment. The first steps to withdraw the Communists from overseas units are taking place in the Middle East and Far East Commands.
Special sections in the records offices of the three services are co-operating with the investigation branches established by the military provost marshals.
• An official announcement is expected this week banning Communists from Royal ordnance factories and Royal dockyards. The Prime Minister, Mr. C. R. Attlee, in the House of Commons defended the recent decision to ban the employment of Communists and Fascists at the Air Ministry headquarters, but refused to reveal whether the ban would be extended to local government and the armed forces.
