AUST. PLANS FOR REMOVAL OF FOOD SUBSIDIES
CANBERRA, June 17.
Giving details of the Federal Government’s decisions to discontinue certain subsidies and the rationing: of meat and clothing and to end the Commonwealth control of prices, rents and land sales within three months, the Prime Minister, Mr. J. B. Chifley, said that the Commonwealth Government had undertaken to guarantee the cost of production of butter and cheese until June 1952 and had fixed the home consumption price with a subsidy bringing that price up to the guaranteed price.
The States and the Commonwealth will co-operate in fixing the State pric® levels.
The potato subsidy will be discontinued on October 31. The subsidy on whole milk will be limited to commitments arising under the existing arrangements with the State Govern-, ment which expire on September 30. The tea subsidy will be retained, provided that rationing and buying by the Central Tea Board are continued and prices are controlled by the Stata Governments.
The wool subsidy will be discontinued on July 31. The subsidy on inter-State shipping freights will be discontinued on Juna
30. The dates for the discontinuation of other subsidies are still under consideration.
