MORTALLY WOUNDED WHALE ATTACKS AND HOLES CHASER

(P.A.) BLENHEIM, June 16. A jasrged hole about 6ft. square was punched in ths bow of one of the Tory Channel whale chasers about two miles out in Cook Strait t'ni3 morning- when it was attacked by a mortally wounded humpback.

While capture of the whale was* left to another chaser which was i standing by, the damaged craft was driven at full throttle in ] through Tory Channel and straight up to Picton for repairs.

The speed of the vessel kept the damaged bov well out of the water. The attack occurred when the whale after being harpooned doubled back on its tracks.

It was again hit by a harpoon bomb and dived, but instead of submerging as far as possible in an effort to escape it shot back to the surface at an acute angle. The whale caught the chaser a shattering blow Fortunately, most of the damage was above the waterune.
