AERO CLUBS’ ROLE IN DEFENCE TRAINING

(P.A.) DUNEDIN, June 17. The Minister of Defence, Mr. F. Jones, in arranging for aero clubs to participate in the training of the Air Training Corps, had persuaded the public into believing that he was helping the clubs, and at the same time, had handed over a defence responsibility, said Mr. I. H. Penrose at the annual meeting of the Otago Aero Club last night. “The Minister showed astuteness that would only be expected of a Minister of Finance,” he said. If it was that the aero clubs formed part of the defence training system, then they should be supported, Mr. Penrose went on, and if they were not they were merely a sporting organisation and should be trained as such.
