OWNERS’ CLAIM FOR HIHIROROA
LAND SETTLEMENT ISSUE
The opening address of Mr. H. P. Richmond, appearing for the claimants, took up a substantial portion of the opening session yesterday of the Gisborne Land Sales Committee’s hearing of the claim of the executors of the T. C. Williamson Estate for compensation for the compulsory acquisition of the Hihiroroa block by the Crown for servicemen’s settlement. The claim is for £68,863, subject to slight modifications, and is based upon the 1942 value of the property. It was disclosed in Mr. Richmond’s address that the basic value placed on the property by the Crown, for the purposes of the hearing, is £42,000. Mr. L. C. Parker appeared with Mr. Richmond for the claimants, and Mr W. S. Kent for the Crown. Early evidence for the claimants was given by Mr. J. C. Graham, one of four witnesses to be called by Mr. Richmond. Tho hearing of the claim of the Taumata Investment Company, Limited, against the Crown in respect of the taking of the Taumata block of 7357 acres has been set down for Monday. June 21. The claim in this case is for £106,000.
