DEFEAT OF APANUI

PLAY ON TE KAHA FIELD

A team representing the Matakaoa Rugby Sub-Union visited Te Kaha on Saturday and defeated the Apanui (Bay of Plenty) sub-Union by 14 points to 5. The game .which was played in fine weather, provided an abundance of excitement for a large gathering of spectators. Almost from the outset the match resolved itself into a forward battle, both packs working hard throughout. Play in the first spell was without marked advantage to either, side, although Apanui were able to secure the first try. Apanui were unable to maintain their advantage i n the second half. Matakaoa gained the ball from the scrummages more frequently and the backs made excellent use of their opportunities in some well-timed movements leading to tries by S. Jensen, R. White, W. Rickard and T. Stainton, the last named adding one conversion. Mr. S. Southern was the referee. HOCKEY SIDES WELL MATCHED Upon the occasion of the Matakaoa football representative team’s visit to Te Kaha on Saturday the Kawakawa women’s hockey team from Te Araroa travelled to Cape Runaway and defeated the Tainui women’s eleven by two goals to one. The teams proved to be very evenly matched and some good hard play was witnessed. V. Mill and R. Brown, both novices, played exceptionally well for Kawakawa. Sound combined play resulted in goals by D. Crawford and E. Sterling. Tainui’s single goal was secured by Mrs. Ruwhiu.

Upon the return of the Matakaoa representative team to Cape Runaway, both football and hockey players were entertained at tea A dance for all occupied the evening.
