STATE SUBSIDY ON PEDIGREE LIVESTOCK
(P.A.) AUCKLAND. June 15. “The importation of pedigree livestock is a heavy drain on farmers and I feel that all Governments should subsidise imports to encourage better breeding.” This statement was made by Mr. C. E. Edwards, owner of Mount Seiflon Estate, Shropshire, who arrived by the Marine Phoenix from Sydney. Sponsored by the National Sheepbreeders’ Association of Great'Britain, Mr. Edwards is on what he terms a “dollar mission” and he has already sold a considerable quantity of pedigree stock in Spain, Egypt and South Africa. Mr. . Edwards found in Southern Rhodesia that the Government subsidised farmers and breeders 50 per cent for pedigree imports, and he understood that the Australian Federal Government allowed £SO on pedigree sheep and £IOO on animals imported from overseas. He said he had noted in all the countries visited a grave shortage of pedigree sires. Mr. Edwards had hoped to spend some time in New Zealand but travelling restrictions compelled him to continue his journey in the Marine Phoenix.
