540 POLIO CASES REPORTED IN N.Z.

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 15. The Health Department announced that since the poliomyelitis outbreak began- towards the end of 1947, almost 540 positive cases had been, reported throughout New Zealand. Eighteen positive cases were admitted to New Zealand hospitals last week. POLIO PATIENTS MAKE GOOD RECOVERY (P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, June 15. Only three of the 47 poliomyelitis patients admitted to the New Plymouth Hospital during the present epidemic will suffer paralysis that will impair their normal activities, Dr. H. C. Barrett, medical superintendent told the Taranaki Hospital Board today. Of the patients admitted 32 had made a complete rocovery, six remained in hospital and eight were outpatients. One fatal case which was treated for several days in a respirator died from heart failure due to toxaemia.
