DECLINE IN STANDARDS OF WORK DEPLORED
The continued decline in standards of work was commented on by the chairman, Mr, R. Harding, in his annual report presented at this week’s meeting of the Hawke’s Bay County Council.
“It is appalling to realise that two years have passed since I had occasion to draw attention to the continued decline in our standards of work and responsibility, and that no effort has been made to improve the position,” added Mr. Harding. “I know that 1 may be criticised for the use of such words, as ‘tragic deterioration, ’ ‘appalling’ and ‘decline’ when similar words and phrases have appeared from time to time in _ the press with respect to the condition of certain county roads, proclaiming a very human expression of feeling by users, who have suffered discomfort. But the latter is mostly a result of the former, and while methods can still be employed to remedy these temporary inconveniences, can we find a way or moans to eliminate the cause? “It is hoped that shortages of imports, difficulties of machinery replacements and general lack of necessary materials will be overcome, hut can general apathy and lack of desire to establish a co-ordinated effort he stamped out in time to prevent a national disaster?” he added.
