BURNING COAL DISCHARGED FROM VESSEL
ADELAIDE, June 14
Firemen are standing by today as smouldering coal is unloaded from the freighter Yvansford at Fort Adelaide. Wfien discharge began heavy smoke and vapour prevented the men entering the holds, and grabs were used to remove the hot coal.
South Australian hre officers said today that it was necessary to unioao the coal as danger existed of the Wansford exploding or of fire breaking out again in overpowering strength. When the hatches were first unbattened masses of smoke and lumes belched forth and the firemen donned respirators before pouring streams of water on the cargo. The ship's captain was temporarily overcome when a fault developed in nis respirator. Though much of the coal has been removed smoke and fumes are not diminishing, and it is now expected that the entire cargo of BUOO tons consigned to New Zealand will have to be removed before the ship is safe.
