TOKOMARU RUGBY

PLAY ON HEAVY FIELD UNITED-TAWHITI DRAW lHerald Correuponiient.) With three Rugby games during the afternoon the Tokomaru Bay ground, which had been in a sodden condition for Monday’s play and was without the benefit of drying weather conditions since, was a well-churned area on Saturday. In a ragged game that finished in pouring rain United and Tawhiti drew three all. United’s score came a few minutes after the start when Gibson made an opening for Collins to get a try in good position. The kick failed. United had the heavier pack, but Tawhiti were getting their share of the ball from the set serums. It was a forwards' day and both packs made good use of the ground. Bruce Steven (United) was prominent. In the Tawhiti pack Joe Ngatai was outstanding and was always on the ball. Tawhiti were given a chance when United infringed inside their own 25, but the kick was wide. By the middle of the second spell rain had begun to fall in earnest and the rest of the game was witnessed by a rapidly diminishing number of spectators. Just before the final whistle Tawhiti penetrated from a melee and made the scores equal, at 3-all. Mr. R. Jackson was the referee. Mata Beat Waima At Mata the home senior team defeated Waima by 14 points to nil. Mata had most of the play. Both teams were lacking some of their star players, injured in the last two weeks. Morey was responsible for a smart try when all his backs were in action to send him over the line. He converted the try. B. Peachey intercepted and made a brilliant run almost from his own 25 to score well out. His brother, Tom Peachey, scored from a dribbling rush started by Darney Walker and the remaining try was scored by Waititi from a melee an the line. In the two junior matches at Tokomaru Bay all four teams tried to use their backs instead of meeting the conditions with forward play. In the first match, United (A) defeated Waima, 9-3. The losers had the territorial margin in the first spell and were unlucky twice 1 in missing tries. The United score resulted from _ a penalty kick by Peter Potae and tries by Buster Chaffey and Mark Collins. A try for Waima was scored by Te Kira. Mr. Milner was the referee. United were again the winners in the second junior match, the B team defeating Tawhiti by 6 points to 3. Tukarua, United’s half-back, was outstanding. Tawhiti opened the score just after the game started. United replied with tries scored by Arnold Campbell and the full-back, David Hadfield. Mr. Jack Corbett was the referee.
