INSTANCES OF FLOOD RELIEF WORK RECOUNTED

Instances of the splendid spirit in which the flood relief work was carried out by the residents of Gisborne were given by Major E R. Elliott, of the Salvation Army.. in an address to yesterday's meeting of the Gisborne Rotary Club in the Bon Accord Lounge.

Major Elliott recounted several incidents. both humorous and rather tragic which occurred when relief was being dispensed following the flood. The 12 field officers, who had been appointed to investigate the individual relief measures necessary had reported that 275 houses in the district had required immediate attention, while 150 to 200 also would need attention.. He expressed regret that Gisborne had not been able to muster 1000 workers to assist the farmers tq clean up the aftermath of the flood, and stated that arrangements had been made to feed 1500 workers during one week-end. Few had gone out into the country, however.

In moving a vote of thanks to Major Elliott for his talk, the chairman for the day, Mr. W M. Jenkins, also expressed the aopreciation of the Gisborne Rotary Club to Major Elliott and all voluntary workers for the task they had done so splendidly during the flood disaster
