£35,000 JEWEL CLAIM REOPENED
LONDON, May 20. The British authorities are reopening the rejected compensation claim by the Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg for £35,000 worth of jewellery which she alleges was looted by British troops in May, 1945. In the last two years she has sought the aid of Queen Mary through the Queen-Mother of Denmark, also the help of the Duke of Edinburgh. She says that a British patrol commanded by a major held her at pistolpoint at Glucksburg Castle and took 38 pieces of jewellery, including gifts from British and Russian royalties. Her claim was rejected last year on the ground that the incident occurred before August 1, 1945, which was the deadline before which claims by Germans would not be considered. The British Deputy Chief of Staff has now informed the Grand Duchess that “because of special circumstances the claim may now be examined with a view of payment of compensation.
