At the height of the inundation of Friday, May 14, only small areas of rising ground in the neighbourhood of Waihirere, Bushmere road, and Matawhero were beyond the reach of the floodwaters, in a huge area of flat country representing the best agricultural land in the distinct. The above map, prepared by the P.B. Catchment Board, indicates the localities covered by the 1944 and 1948 floods respectively, and gives a clear idea of the extent of the recent inundation. The Borough of Gisborne, indicated by widely-spaced parallel lines, was untouched by flood-waters.
