DRY SUMMER, BUT FLOWERS EXHIBITED OF HIGH STANDARD

“Although a certain amount of difficulty was met with by gardeners on account of the fourth successive dry summer, exhibits at all shows were mainly of a very high standard, tending to confirm the statements so frequently made by visitors that in Gisborne "blooms of the highest quality can be produced,’’ states the annual report ol the P.B. Horticultural Society to be presented to members at the twenty-fourth annual meeting in the Bon Accord rooms at 8 p.m. next Tuesday. The year generally was a good one, three shows having been held in the Army Hall and a chrysanthemum display in the Bon Accord rooms. The report records that the best display of gladioli and carnations ever to have been staged in Gisborne was benched at the two-day gladiolii show. Decorative work was also of a high order. A Carnation Circle was recently foimed. During the coming year it is hoped that crysanthemum and gladiolus circles also will be formed. The year was one of heavy expense, but a modest profit of £lO 5s 9d is recorded. The accumulated funds account now stands at 181 5s 8d and. with no liabilities, the society is now in a sound financial position. The membership stands at 307 subscribing, three life and two honorary members.
