U.S. CONSCRIPTION BILL PASSES SENATE

(10 a.m.) WASHINGTON, June 11. The Senate yesterday approved, by 78 votes to 10, the peacetime draft of men between the ages of 19 and 25 inclusive, and the measure now goes to the House. The bill as amended by the Senate, falls far short of President Truman’s demands but it will put roughly two of every three single non-veterans in uniform during the next year and boost the strength of the United States armed forces to 1,795.000 men—349,000 above the present figure. The major provisions of the bill now include the induction into the regular forces of all men between 19 and 25 for two years’ service, with married men and war veterans.
