AMUSEMENTS
Majestic.—“ The Overlanders” is the tale of man’s struggle against the forces of nature, his loves, hopes and aspirations, a story which echoes the heartbeats of Australia. Dan McAlpine ("Chips” Rafferty), when his 1000 head of cattla were threatened by the Japanese invasion, decided to drive them across the continent, some 1600 miles, to Queensland. He is joined by the Parsons family, who are admirably portrayed by Daphne Campbell, John Nugent Hayward, Jean Blue and Helen Grieve. The party takes the herd through some great hazards. King’s.—"So Well Remembered.” now being screened at the King’s Theatre today, is the life story of George Boswell (John Mills), a struggling newspaper man who rises to be Mayor of Browdley. The Town Council is receiving applications for the post of librarian at the city library, when George opposes his fellow-councillors in respect of a certain applicant, Olivia Channing (whose father was a mill-owner responsible for Browdley’s housing problem). George’s championship is successful, and later he marries Olivia. But the union does not turn out happily. Regent.—Can one forgive a woman for being unfaithful? That is the dramatic question underlying one of the most powerful motion pictures to be seen in many a week. "The Unfaithful,” a Warner Bros, drama starring Ann Sheridan, Lew Ayres and Zachary Scott, which began yesterday, concerns a young society matron, in love with her husband, who goes on trial for killing an intruder. Almost more important, however, is the revelation that she had been a friend of this dead man some time ago, when her husband was away. Webster Booth and Anne .Ziegler,—The smaller towns throughout the Dominion at various times raise voice, protesting that famous artists from overseas are prone to visit the four main cities, thereby denying audiences elsewhere an opportunity to sco and hear them. Thus the decision of Webster Booth and Anie Ziegler to make their tour of New Zealand as comprehensive as it can possihly be is as commendable as it is deserving of widespread support. These artists enjoy a measure of public esteem that comes only to a chosen few. The box plan arrangements for the Gisborne concert on June 21 are advertised. Opera House.—Maureen Kenny s annual entertainment in aid of the Hine Materoa Children’s Home, “Xmas Frolics Revue,” which was postponed from December owing to the infantile paralysis epidemic, will be presented at the Opera House on Thursday, June 24, at 8 o'clock Over 100 performers will include guest artists from Napier in a merry show of mirth, melody, dancing, specialty turns and comedy sketches. The box plans will open on Monday at Arthur Toye, Limited, where tickets may he obtained.
