BARNACLE THREAT TO SHELLFISH FIELDS

SYDNEY, May 14.

Australian barnacles which are reported to be threatening Britain's shellfish industry abound in Sydney waters, but natural enemies keep them in check.

According to the British experts the barnacle, Eliininious Modestus, was probably carried to England on ships’ hulls and has multiplied rapidly. The superintendent of the New South Wales State Fisheries, Mr. T. Roughley, said the barnacles did not damage the oysters themselves, but were detrimental because they adhered to the oyster shell and when the oysters were gathered died and caused an unpleasant smell. They also spoilt the appearance of the oyster shell.
