PLEA FOR BLOOD BANK SYSTEM IN U.S.
WASHINGTON, May 10,
A nation-wide blood bank system big ' enough to meet the needs of any emergency—even an atomic one—was accepted as the goal of the American Association of Blood Banks in meetings just ended here. It was estimated that’ in case of an atomic attack, 10 times as much blood as normally used in any given community would be needed immediately to combat the alpha and gamma radiations, which prevent the production of red blood corpuscles. Therefore, a committee has been created to correlate techniques and equipment so that the products of 1200 non-profit hospital and community blood banks in the U.S.A. may be interchangeable in an emergency. Blood from several areas may be shipped lo a e,Raster centre for immediate use, as at the time of the Texas City disaster. About v 2,000,000 transfusions of 500 cubic centimetres each are now given in the United States each year.
