THE AGA KHAN WINS THE OAKS
(11.30 a.m.) LONDON, June 3. The largest field for 100 years and the second largest in history ran in the Oaks at Epsom. Heavy rain yesterday made the going soft. Result: The Oaks, of li miles.— Masaka, 1; AngeJola, 2; Folie 11, 3. Won by six lengths; three lengths. Masaka, which is owned by the Aga Khan, was always well placed and took the lead soon after passing Tattenham Corner and drew clear in the straight to win easily, defeating His Majesty’s Apgelola, which made up some ground in the straight. Their Majesties, Princess Elizabeth and members of the Royal Family attended to see the King’s horse run. It was probably the “dressiest” Oaks meeting since before the war. Nearly all the men in the members’ enclosure wore grey top hats and morning coats. A high wind blew down an elm tree on to a private car in Surrey street a few seconds before the King and Queen were due to pass on their way to the Epsom racecourse. The police diverted the Royal car. through a farm.
