SUDAN-EGYPT UNION WOULD BE “HEIGHT OF FOLLY”
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 3. The opinion that the union of Egypt and Anglo-Eeyptiar. Sudan under an independent Egypt would be “folly of the highest degree" was expressed by Mr. A. Tilley, assistant chief accountant to the Sudan Railways for the last 20 years, who arrived by the Salamaua front ’ Egypt this morning to settle in New Zealand. There was an agitation in Egypt for union but little in the Sudan, he said. He thought Britain had clone a great job in the last 50 years in turning a desert peopled by wild tribesmen into a prosperous area with good health services and opportuities foi higher education. There were now Sudanese doctors, graduates of Khartoum University.
The Sudan might be independent in '2O years he hoped within the British Commonwealth of Nations. The people were a fine type, loyal and hard-work-ing.
