Britain, he said, had made 18 unavailing approaches to the Russians whose attitude in the matter was deplorable by any standards of civilisation or of common humanity. The Government could not support Lord Vansiltart’s suggestion that wives accompanying Russians now in Britain should he expelled. "if large retaliatory measures were adopted we would be running near the brink with Russia and might cause a world-wide conflagration,' 1 he said. The Government would investigate a suggestion that the United Nations should be approached.
