OIL STRUCK 7000 FT. IN SEABED OFF U.S. COAST
( N.Z.P. A —lJputer—Ou’yright.) (10 a.m.) NEW YORK, May 25. America’s urgent search for new oil reserves has driven prospectors to sea with success. Engineers have struck oil eight miles out in the Gulf of Mexico, off the Louisiana coast, A huge steel platform was built in the sea rising 60ft. above the water which is 48ft. deep here, A test bore began last March and has just found oil 7000 feet below the gulf lloor. The platform is selfcontained. It has three decks containing living quarters, recreation rooms, offices and machinery. A daily ship service maintains supplies. The project, which was undertaken by a Standard Oil affiliate, is believed to be the first open-sea well It has already cost £372,000. The shallow continental shelf continues upwards of 140 miles out to sea, but engineers say it will not be possible to drill in depths of more than 300 feet.
