CHIANG’S TROOPS LIFT FORTY-DAY SIEGE

NANKING, May 24

Government troops in Shansi Province today captured the Communist base at Hweijen, 20 miles south-west of the Government bastion of Tatung, and lified a 40-day Communist siege of Yinghsien in a surprise counteroffensive. Heavy Communist losses are said to include one battalion wiped out, at Yinghsien. The main objective of the drive is to ensure the smooth functioning of the Peking-Suiyuan railway. A lull in the South Jehol front continues.
