Headquarters of the American Far East Air Forces announced that a British Overseas Airways Corporation llying-boat was intercepted by an American fighter aircraft near Okinawa on Saturday but was not forced to land. The flying-boat sighted was an “unidentified aircraft” and a warning shot was fired when it failed to comply with instructions to change its course. The flying-boat, after establishing its identification, resumed its course, t Major-General Thomas White, acting commander of the Air Forces, expressed regrets to Sir A. D. Gascoigne, head of the United Kingdom liaison mission in Japan. The United States Air Force headquarters said yesterday it was "completely mystified” by the report. It was making urgent inquiries through Tokyo headquarters. The spokesman said "if it is true it is an extremely regrettable and unfortunate matter and must, of course, have been due to a misunderstanding. The 8.0.A.C. operates through that area with our full knowledge, permission and approval- We have always been ready to help them.”
Neither the 80.A.C. offices here nor the civil air attache's department in the British Embassy have received any instructions on the matter from London.
