U.S. STOPS TALKS ON AUSTRIA: CLASH WITH SOVIET

(N.Z.P.A.—Reuter— Copyright.) (10 a.m.) LONDON, May 25. The Austrian peace treaty talks, which were adjourned in London on May G after a disagreement with the Russian Foreign Minister's deputy, have been suspended by the United States. Mr. Samuel Reber, the American deputy, announced last night that his Government was not prepared to resume the talks until a jusxiriaDle basis existed tor continuing them, and that basis, he said, must include Russian assurances about the maintenance of Australia’s 1987 lrontiers and the principle of no reparations. The decision to suspend the talks is not surprising, it is pointed out in London. The deputies have been trying tor over a year to reach an agreement and have held well over 100 meetings, but a deadlock has followed. The decisive "iast straw” came with the Russian deputy's insistence at the last meeting that Austria must cede certain territory to Yugoslavia. The British, American and French deputies said they could not agree, nor, they pointed out, would the Austrian Government be prepared to sign a treaty involving a sacrifice of territory.
