DR. SALAZAR WANTS TO RETIRE
(From Luis Tcives, Reuter's Correspondent.) LISBON (By Air Mail). Statements made by Dr. Antonio de Olivoira Salazar, the Portuguese Prime Minister, and by various members of the Government during the recent celebrations of tbfi twentieth anniversary of Dr. Salazar’s entry into the Government, had led impartial observers here to believe that Portugal’s Prime Minister would like to retire from ofliee and return to his post as Professor of Economics at Coimbra University.
They equally believe, however, that a strict sense of duty will prevent Dr. Salazar from following his inclinations and that he will remain in office as Prime Minister.
A clear indication of his desire to take a rest from the cares of his office was given by him in a speech to the Dean and Professors of the Coimbra
University who came to Lisbon especially to attend' the celebrations in honour of Dr. Salazar's twentieth anniversary as Prime Minister. “In this office, life has not been easy, sweet, or devoid of great worries and sorrows,” he said. “Now and then a ray of light comes and brightens the outlook. Life then is changed and the spirit forgets all that is past. Then, it is worthwhile having worked, fought and grown old to be able to enjoy to the full esteem or gratitude. It is like that today. Nevertheless, nevertheless, I look forward anxiously to the day of my return (to Coimbra University)." On the same day, speaking during the meetings of the Government to Dr. Salazar, Dr. Caeiro Da Mata, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, declared: "We are all prepared to continue to serve while you think fit; but only under your rule.”
