All roads within a short radius of Gisborne were blocked this morning by tiie still rising fioodwaters of (lie Waipaoa River catchment area. A number of cars throughout the district have been caught in the surging water and some had to be abandoned. A summary of the position as supplied by the Gisborne office of the Automobile Association (Auckland) is as follows: — Gisborne - Opotiki, via Waioeka. — Blocked: road impassable at Hexton on the back Ormond road; road blocked at King's road on the section via Waerenga-a hika and at Wae-

renga a-hika; McKay’s bridge, Puha, under water. Gisborne Opotiki, via Coast scenic highway.—Reported open to Ruatoria at 11 a.m. Gisborne-Wairoa, via Hangaroa.--Blocked; road water-covered in Makaraka and Matawhero areas; floodwaters raging over section of the Patutahi road past the Matawhero bridge turn-off; block at Hangaroa yesterday and no communication possible today. Gisborne-Wairoa, via Morere.— Blocked bv surface water in the Muriwai area; low-level Maraetaha No. 1 bridge under water; surface water south of Nuhaka. but that section of the route otherwise in order.
